What to Wear to a Wedding: A Guest Dress Guide

Received a wedding invitation and wondering what to wear? Choosing a wedding guest dress is easier when you know a few simple rules. Here is our practical guide to dressing for a wedding with confidence.

1. Read the invitation

The invitation often gives clues about the dress code. A formal evening reception calls for a long or very elegant dress; a relaxed garden or countryside wedding allows lighter fabrics and more colour. If nothing is mentioned, an elegant midi or maxi dress is almost always appropriate.

2. The golden rule: avoid white

White, ivory and very pale cream are traditionally reserved for the bride. Choose a colour or a print instead. If you love light colours, look for prints with a clear contrast, or soft pastels such as pink or yellow that cannot be mistaken for bridal white.

3. Can I wear black to a wedding?

Yes – today black is widely accepted at weddings, especially for evening receptions. A black dress with an interesting detail, such as a bow, a one-shoulder neckline or a pleated skirt, looks festive rather than severe. Add colourful accessories or jewellery if you want to brighten the look.

4. Choose the length for the time of day

• Daytime ceremony: a midi dress or a light, flowing maxi dress.
• Evening reception: a maxi dress or a structured, elegant midi.
• Religious ceremony: consider covering your shoulders – a light shawl or jacket over a sleeveless dress works well.

5. Think about comfort

Weddings are long days: ceremony, photos, dinner and dancing. Pick a dress you can sit, walk and dance in. Flowing chiffon and A-line skirts are comfortable for hours, while a fitted dress should still allow you to move freely. Bring a second pair of comfortable shoes for the evening.

6. Plan ahead
